The Charlotte Hornets teamed up with Excel India hosted a special night on Saturday, February 23, 2019 as part of their game night vs. the Brooklyn Nets.
Bollywood Magic Night, January 20, 2018
On January 20, 2018, Excel India, an organization based out of Orlando founded by former Bollywood actress Chandni Navodita hosted their first Bollywood Magic Night in Charlotte. Excel India’s mission is to bring Indian culture to the mainstream. The festivities included the Hornet’s cheerleading squad, the Honyebees performing a Bollywood number during a time out in full Bollywood outfits. Beginning at 1pm, 13 dance teams descended into Spectrum Arena all vying for a chance to perform in front of up to 20,000 people during halftime of the Charlotte Hornets vs. the Miami Heat game that evening. Teams came from all over, ranging from Charlotte to Cary to a team from Orlando.
Each team had approximately four minutes to perform a choreographed routine to a song mix of their choice. The judges gave scores based on two categories: choreography and quality, on a scale of 1-10. All the teams were decked out in beautiful colors and traditional wear. Participants were diverse, ranging from men and women, young and old. In the end, all the teams performed well but Carolina Indian Arts, senior group, won.
They fused traditional, high energy bhangra with tight choreography that blended in current hip hop favorites to make for a winning combination. Receiving straight 10’s across the board, Carolina Indian Arts became the inaugural dance team to perform at halftime for the Charlotte Hornets. Bollywood Magic nights are taking place at numerous NBA games this season.
